The Prior N variety was developed by the Freiburg Research Institute in Germany (WBI, Staatliches Weinbauinstitut Freiburg). It has very good resistance to powdery mildew and good resistance to downy mildew. Its phenology is later than the Merlot variety (late bud break, medium to late maturity). Wines made from this variety are fruitier and rounder than those from Gamay. They are also more floral than those from Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Additionally, its high polyphenol potential has been notably observed (rapid color release and tannins that require management).
