The Johanniter B variety was selected by the Freiburg Research Institute in Germany (WBI, Staatliches Weinbauinstitut Freiburg). Its vigor is estimated from moderate to strong, its budburst timing is considered early to medium (similar to Pinot Noir). Its ripening period falls between Pinot Blanc and Riesling. The wines produced are less rich and round than those from Chardonnay, but are spicier and sweeter than those from Riesling. They are also characterized by more pronounced petrol notes than wines from Sauvignon (but less than those from Riesling).
